Eat From The Pantry Challenge: My Plans

I am excited to be joining up with Life As Mom and Money Saving Mom in their month long challenge for January: Eat From Your Pantry! You can read more about this here or here.

I've already posted my month long meal plan, which you can read here, although I'm going to be adjusting just a couple of items from what is listed.


So my plan for the month will be this:

1. Freezer Cooking Day(s), beginning on January 1st, hopefully ending on the 2nd. I'll be using a lot of the items I purchased during my shopping trips in December and also using what we already have in the pantry and freezer.

2. Spend no more than $225 for groceries in the month of January. This is BIG goal for us. We are thrilled with the amount of savings we were able to accomplish in December by really cracking down on spending and shopping wisely, so I'm setting this goal with a lot of confidence that we will be able to reach it. I still plan on going out for my weekly trip to Rainbow Foods on Wednesdays to help me stock up on items I will need for February's menu or fresh items during January.

3. Find a really, really good casserole recipe. I have a big aversion to 'cream of anything soup' and nearly every casserole, or as we Minnesotan's say... "hot dish" recipes call for some sort of canned cream soup, and I just can quite get my head in to that cooking method. I did find a really neat 'universal casserole' recipe this week, so my hubby and I have been brainstorming our own ingredients to come up with something healthy and tasty. I really only need one good recipe, to fill two nights in a month long menu. I like to have what I call "pan food" for Tuesday nights, since we are busy and usually rushing to leave the house. I want to serve up something healthy and delicious, but also something that requires nothing more than 'freezer removal, oven insertion'.


I'm eager to get starting with my freezer cooking for January and to see if we are able to stay on track for the month. I plan on posting weekly what our meals are and how we are doing on our grocery spending goals. What to join in the fun? Click here to link up your goals!

CVS Savings

I love CVS. Aside from Target, it is my favorite place to shop for basics. I went out to CVS last night, with ECBs in hand that were soon to expire. Here is how my trip went:

I went with $20.99 in ECBs and other coupons. I got:



1 bottle of Nivea body wash
1 tube of Crest ProHealth toothpaste
1 bottle of Listerine mouthwash
2 new shades of lipstick
2 Glade glass scented oil candle holders
2 packs of scented oil candle refills

After coupons and ECBs, I spent $4.06 OOP (which was mostly just the tax) and I received back $24.00 in ECBs. I also received a $5.00 off WYB $15 coupon and a BOGO for Theraflu.

I was especially happy to get the glass scented oil candle holders. I was expecting to get another set of the tin holders, so I was really happy to find these nice glass ones. Look how pretty!


This only cost me $0.75!!

There should be a few good deals at CVS next week too.

UPDATE: I realized a few days later, that I could still submit one more rebate form for my purchase of these Glade products, so after my $5.00 rebate, this whole transaction at CVS will be a $0.94 money maker!

Meal Planning: January 2010

As a very busy mom to three toddlers, cooking has never been my favorite activity. But I have recently found much more enjoyment in preparing delicious and nutritious meals by learning and implementing the idea of Freezer Cooking. If you would like to learn more about it, check out the great posts here and here.

My freezer cooking efforts last month have seriously paid off. Dinner time is not stressful, since I have a variety of home cooked meals, already prepared to choose from if I have neither the time or energy to make something from scratch that particular day.

My Savings This Week - 12/23/09

My excitement for shopping this week was temporarily haulted yesterday morning. But alas, I ventured out again alter in the day after reworking my coupons and shopping lists and still achieved some great savings.

I don't have a photo this week, and probably wont get to that, but here is a summary of what I purchased:

8 boxes of our favorite cereal
10 bags of frozen veggies
2 pints of fresh half & half
1 jar of baking yeast

Then I ran across the street to Cub Foods and picked up a 5lb box of Cuties Clementine Oranges (for only 2.98!!!).

We are so stocked up on fruits and veggies, lots of baking supplies and makings for soup.

I am almost finished on our Meal Plan for January, and when it's finalized I will get that posted here. I'm looking forward to my Freezer Cooking Day (tentatively planned for Jan 1st) and I'm hoping that I will need very few additional items to complete our meals for the January.

Rainbow/Roundy's Coupon Policy Change

It's official. I just returned home from my Rainbow and they would not double any of my coupons. Even those from the newspaper inserts, because they all stated DND/DNT. The computer system will still automatically do it, so they were going to manually enter each coupon for half of it's value, so when the computer doubled it automatically, it was only giving me the face value of the coupon off.

I talked to the store manager about and she said that this is not a one-time thing for this week only. This is the new Roundy's coupon policy. No more automatic double of the first five coupon you hand over.

I actually ended up not getting any groceries this morning, since all of my coupons would have been rejected from doubling under their new policy. I do plan to write a letter to the Roundy's corporate office requesting a written copy of their coupon/double coupon policy so that it can be crystal clear for future shopping trips.

Ideas for Coupon Organization

It goes without saying that different people will have different methods for organization. But today I thought I would share my method for organizing coupons. This is what works for me.


All of my coupons are stored in one central location: a file folder tote. Or, more accurately, a file folder wicker crate, but you get the idea.

Each hanging folder has a labeled tab, which divides all of my inserts. The inserts are stored in order by date, most recent in front.


This is a great method, since almost any blog that provides deal advice will reference coupons by the name of the insert and the insert distribution date. Storing your coupons un-clipped in the original insert will provide the easiest way to locate a specific coupon when referencing deal ideas.

If you see a coupon in an insert for an item that you will buy for sure, it is a regular purchase for your family, then it would make sense to clip it and carry it with you, because you know you'll use it. Otherwise, the rest are better stored un-clipped until when/if they are needed. This will eliminate a lot of clipping time and sorting work!

I also have a 3-ring binder. In this binder I have tabs that divide baseball card holders. The baseball card holder is the perfect size to keep an internet printed coupon. Since internet printed coupons can come and go very quickly, it's best to print them when you can in order to ensure you'll have it when the right sale comes around. My divider tabs in the binder sort my printed coupons by category (baby, frozen foods, laundry & cleaning, dairy, meat, etc.) which makes it simple to locate a coupon that I have already printed.


My 3-ring binder stores neatly in the back of my insert tote, making the whole works orderly and compact enough to put away in a cabinet, up on a shelf, or I can easily take the whole thing with me in the car.

Now I may be looking through a store flyer, notice a good sale on an item that none of the blogs I follow have commented on. This is where the coupon database comes in. Just type in the brand name of the product, or manufacturers name and you will receive a list of possible coupon matches. It will list the source of the coupon, and those that are from inserts will be easy to locate with this organization method.

This is my method, it works for me and has ended the days of piles upon piles of clipped, un-clipped and printed coupons being all over my kitchen counter top. What works for you?

Did you know...

... that the distribution date and source of a coupon insert, such as a SmartSource, is printed on the spine of each insert? "Spine?" you say... Yes! As tiny as it may be, the outer page that make the front and back cover to each insert has printed right on the crease, in the tiniest of print, the distribution date and for which circulating newspaper each insert was prepared for.


While I still do write on the front cover, in large print, the date of each insert, it is helpful to be able to check the spine in case you either forgot to write it on the front, or you would like to see which newspaper this particular insert came from (as not all coupon inserts are created equally!).

My Savings This Week - 12/16/09

Another week, more savings. Here are the details of my shopping adventures yesterday. I say adventures, because it was interesting. With such great sales and great coupons to boot, there were bound to be some shortages, and I certainly ran into a few of them. Topped off by shopping with three kids in tow (for part of the day), doctor appointments for my twins... it was a full day to say the least!

2 3/4 lbs of bananas
5 lbs of butter
4 blocks of cheese
3 bags of shredded cheese
4 quarts of ice cream
3 cartons of juicy juice (with immunity boost)
6 bottles of juicy juice (the bigger 64oz bottles)
6 jars of pasta sauce
5 bags of frozen veggies
2 bags of chocolate chips
4 cartons of fresh orange juice
7 boxes of cream cheese
1 box of lasagna noodles
1 bottle of chili sauce (not on sale, but needed for a recipe)
3 limes (recipe)
ginger root (recipe)
bean sprouts (recipe)
1 large carton of yogurt (not on sale, but my husband really wanted this)
(one lime and about half the bananas are not pictured, they've already be eaten!)

Once again, seven separate transaction. This time, just because of my hectic schedule and other appointments for the day, I ended up going to three different Rainbow stores and did 2-3 transactions at each store.

End result:

Total Value of All Groceries (before sales or coupons): $216.02
Total Discounts from sales and coupons: -$161.22

Total OOP: $54.80

I mentioned that I goofed up one transaction, which caused my coupons not to be doubled. But it was my mistake when I switched up my planned shopping list in the store. I also bought a few non-sale/non-coupon items that I needed for a specific recipe that we wanted to try. So between those two things, my OOP was a bit higher than it could have been, but still I was at 75% savings: not too bad.

Busy Week, Great Shopping

Well, yesterday was another great day for shopping and I scored lots of groceries at great prices (including totally free veggies!). But it was also crazy busy with lots of other stuff going on around the house. So I'll post up more details later today (hopefully!) about my shopping trips and all my savings. As I was walking out of the store, there was stand setup right by the exit featurning another promotion being put on by Rainbow, together with the Pioneer Press. If I got paper subscription, I received a Rainbow gift card. Now, I was literally just that day going to call a paper to start a subscription and had non-grocery money set aside for this. So far, I have been driving to a store each Sunday morning to buy my paper, but was tired of this, so starting a newspaper subscription was already in the plans and budget. But, by doing it here with the Rainbow promo, I not only received another Rainbow gift card, I also got a discount on the cost of the subscription. So I saved on both ends. Then I continued with my last transaction:

My Savings This Week - 12/09/09

Another great week of savings. Though the weather outside today was frightful, the deals were just too delightful to stay home. I braved the cold and blowing snow at 5:45am and again later in the afternoon to trek over to my favorite Rainbow and picked up the following:


8 boxes of cereal
6.5 lbs of bananas
6 bags of frozen veggies
1 box of brownie mix
2 gallon of milk
8 cans of soup
4 bottles of salad dressing
2 pints of ice cream
3 beef chuck roasts
2 bottles of mayo
15 lbs flour
2 bags of chocolate chips
2 boxes of pancake mix
1 box of bread mix
1 bag of coffee
1 bottle of extra virgin olive oil
2 bottles of canola oil
2 boxes of chicken stock
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
2 boxes of Dreamfields pasta
2 1/2 lbs apples
2 tubs of caramel apple dip
3 pints fresh half & half
3 cartons of fresh orange juice
1 bag mini marshmallows

I split all of this up between two different outings and seven separate transactions. Yes, that sounds like a lot. But the key to success was careful planning. I had each transaction on a separate shopping list with all of my coupons bundled and ready for each transaction. Doing this prep work at home made the actual shopping trip very quick and easy.

As the icing on the cake, after my first four transactions in my morning shopping trip, I had reached the purchase requirement for the "Free Food" promo that Rainbow has been running this fall, so I received a gift card that I was able to use for my subsequent three transactions. That sweetened the deal even further! Of course, I'm still earning FuelPerks!, last week I saved $9.80 on gas thanks to FuelPerks!

In the end, I spent a total out of pocket of $39.60 for everything. At full price, this would have been $217.17, with makes my savings today a whopping $177.57 or 82%. I stayed within my budget for groceries for this week and got a few treats for the family that makes all the shopping prep work worth the effort.

I saved 78% at Rainbow this week!

I love shopping at Rainbow Foods on Double Coupon Wednesdays.

So this week was a great week. We didn't need too much by way of groceries. Our freezer is stocked with most of our meals for the month already. However, I did purchase everything you see here, at a 78% savings:



Everything you see here would have been $52.08 if purchased at full price. I paid just $11.59 for all of it. All it took was a little planning, and I purchased this in two transactions.

Here is how I did it:

Transaction #1

6 boxes of Cereal
2 pints of Fresh Half & Half

I received the $10.00 instant credit from General Mills on the cereal, plus I received a coupon for a free gallon of milk on my next order. I had five coupons on the GM cereal, doubled for a total discount of $8.50, then I had another $1.45 in coupons that were not doubled. Total discounts between GM deal and all coupons was $19.95, and I spent $5.37 out of pocket.

Transaction #2

1 bag Caribou Coffee (on sale)
2 jars Sweet & Sour sauce (on sale)
2 bottles of St. Ives Body Wash (on sale)
1 gallon Milk
2 packs of yogurt (4 cup packs) (on sale)

I used five coupons, doubled for a total of $10.00 off, plus I used the Free Gallon of Milk coupon I received from the first transaction, which took $3.25 off, and I had another coupon on the Caribou Coffee for $2.00 off. All of the coupon savings, combined with the sale prices gave me a total savings of $20.54 and I spent just $6.22 out of pocket.

I was especially excited about the second transaction, because the milk, body wash and yogurt were completely free and even gave me overage or credit to lower the cost of the coffee and sweet & sour sauce. Considering the coffee alone was regularly $8.29, I saved on the coffee and got everything else for nothing. Not bad for one shopping trip and just a little prep work!
